Who a PhD in Ukraine is for

In Ukraine, the PhD is the third cycle of higher education. It ends with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), which is an academic degree. It is the path for people who want to do research, teach at a university or build a career in science.

  • Applicants need a master’s degree or an equivalent qualification.
  • The programme combines courses worth 30 to 60 ECTS credits with research for a doctoral dissertation.
  • The standard duration is four years, but the dissertation can be defended earlier.
  • Three of our partner universities offer a PhD in English for USD 5,500 a year.

Bear in mind that a PhD is an academic degree, not a licence to practise. It does not entitle you to work as a doctor or in any other health profession: that depends on your professional degree and a separate recognition procedure.

How a PhD in Ukraine works

PhD studies in Ukraine, known as aspirantura, combine classes with research. When you are admitted, the university appoints your academic supervisor, and at the start of your studies you agree an individual research plan with them. You report on your progress to the university regularly.

  1. Admission to the PhD You submit a master’s degree or an equivalent diploma and go through the admission process of the university you choose.
  2. Courses You complete courses worth 30 to 60 ECTS credits.
  3. Research and publications You carry out research under the guidance of your supervisor and publish the results in academic journals.
  4. Dissertation defence You defend your dissertation before a specialised academic council, either a permanent one or one set up for your defence only.
  5. Doctoral diploma You receive the diploma of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

How long does a PhD in Ukraine take?

Ukrainian rules set a standard duration of four years for PhD studies, whatever the mode of study. You do not have to wait until the end of that period, though. In 2024 the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine confirmed that doctoral students have the right to defend their dissertation early, once they have completed the taught and research components of the programme and published the results of their research on the topic of the dissertation.

In our experience, a PhD in Ukraine can be completed in about two years at the fastest. How long yours takes depends mainly on the pace of your research and publications.

In October 2026 the Ukrainian government tightened the rules for awarding the PhD degree. Publications containing self-plagiarism no longer count, only one article from the same issue of a journal is counted, and a university where plagiarism or fabricated or falsified data are found loses the right to set up defence councils for a year. The ministry also checks the publications of council members, and universities publish information about their councils.

Plan your publications from the first year

An early defence is only possible once you have completed the taught and research components and published your results. Since the October 2026 changes, publications containing self-plagiarism and a second article from the same journal issue do not count. That is why it pays to agree a publication plan with your supervisor at the very start of your studies.

Using a Ukrainian PhD in the UK

UK ENIC, the UK’s national agency for international qualifications, issues a Statement of Comparability. It compares your qualification with the level of qualifications in the UK, which helps universities and employers understand it. The statement is not a replacement for your qualification: you keep your Ukrainian degree.

  1. Application You apply to UK ENIC with your Ukrainian diploma.
  2. Fee The Statement of Comparability costs £49.50 plus delivery.
  3. Assessment UK ENIC aims to complete it within 15 working days.
  4. Statement You receive a statement of the UK level of your qualification, which you can show to universities and employers.

Using a Ukrainian PhD in Ireland

In Ireland, NARIC Ireland, run by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), issues free comparability statements. Where possible, it compares a foreign qualification with a level of the Irish National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). A comparability statement only provides advice and is not a legal document: recognition decisions are not made by NARIC Ireland, but by employers, public bodies and universities.
