Dorm: cheap and sociable
A dorm is the easiest way to start: it’s cheap, often close to the university, and makes it easy to meet people. The downsides are a shared kitchen and bathroom, less peace and quiet before exams, and a limited number of places, so you need to apply as soon as you’re admitted.
Apartment: comfort at a higher price
In Riga, a room in an apartment shared with other students usually costs €300–450 a month, and a studio €450–650 plus utilities. On top of that, there’s a deposit, usually equal to one month’s rent.
Cost comparison
| Dorm | Room | Studio | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rent | €150–250 | €300–450 | €450–650 |
| Utilities | included | €40–80 | €60–120 |
| Deposit | none or low | 1 month’s rent | 1–2 months’ rent |
| Contract | academic year | usually 12 months | usually 12 months |
How to look for an apartment
- Start looking in June or July.
- Don’t pay a deposit before viewing the apartment or having a video call with the landlord.
- Ask for a contract in English.
- When you pick up the keys, take photos of the apartment’s condition.
Beware of scams
Scammers often post listings at very low prices and ask for a “reservation” payment. If an offer looks too good to be true, ask us before you pay.
Our advice
First year in a dorm, then an apartment with classmates. That’s what most of the students we work with do.
