Studying in English: what language level is really enough

What universities require

Most universities expect a B2 level. Some accept your advanced-level English result from the school-leaving exam, while others check your English in an interview or a short test. A certificate, such as IELTS or TOEFL, is required less often than you might think.

Medical language is another matter

Even students with very good English have to learn new vocabulary at first: Latin names and terms from anatomy and chemistry. In the first year, universities usually offer medical English classes.

How to prepare before you leave

  • Study biology and chemistry in English from the outset.
  • Watch anatomy lectures with English subtitles.
  • Read short popular science articles.
  • Practice speaking, e.g., by explaining why you want to study medicine. It’s a common interview question.

What about the local language?

Classes are in English, but in the hospital, patients speak their own language. Universities teach it from the first year, and it’s worth taking these classes seriously, because they also make everyday life easier.

Tip

Slovak and Czech are so similar to Polish that after a few months you’ll understand most conversations.
