Your first week at university abroad: a to-do list

You fly in, pick up your keys, and… where do you start? Here’s the list we give our students before they leave.

Before you leave

  • a passport or ID card valid for the whole year;
  • your EHIC and additional insurance;
  • original documents, copies of them, and passport photos;
  • proof of accommodation and the exact address;
  • some cash in euros for the first few days.

Days 1–2: university formalities

At most universities, on the first day you sign your contract, collect your student ID, and set up an account in the university system. Bring proof of your tuition payment, because some dean’s offices won’t issue a student ID without it.

Days 3–4: address registration and banking

In many countries, you have to register your address with the local authorities within a few days of arrival. A local bank account isn’t always necessary, but it makes paying for the dorm and tickets easier.

Tip

Take photos of all your documents and store them in the cloud. That way, a lost student ID is just a matter of one email.

Days 5–7: everyday life

  • a local SIM card or roaming: check that it works without extra charges;
  • a monthly public transportation pass;
  • the nearest clinic and pharmacy;
  • a group of Polish students from your university.

First classes

The first semester usually covers anatomy, histology, biology, and medical chemistry. The pace is fast, so study consistently from the start and make use of notes from older students.
